Nigeria is experiencing a transformation in its automotive sector, as electric vehicles (EVs) steadily become part of the everyday traffic landscape. It’s estimated that between 15,000 and 20,000 EVs are now operating across the country, a sharp increase from just a few years ago. This surge in adoption reflects a growing awareness of environmental issues, coupled with bold government initiatives and strong involvement from both local and international auto manufacturers.

Recognizing the global shift toward cleaner transportation, the Nigerian government has put key policy frameworks in place to encourage EV adoption. In 2022, the National Automotive Design and Development Council unveiled the Electric Vehicle Development Plan, targeting 30% electric vehicle production in Nigeria by 2033. This move complements the broader Energy Transition Plan, which lays out a path for the country to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2060.

We cannot discuss Nigeria’s electric vehicle journey without highlighting Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing (IVM), the country’s first indigenous automaker and a true pioneer in the sector. Founded in 2010 by Chief Innocent Chukwuma, Innoson began by assembling affordable cars for the local market. But in recent years, the company has pivoted boldly toward electric mobility.

IVM’s growing EV lineup includes commercial buses, utility vehicles, and compact sedans, many of which are now visible in Nigerian cities. The company also plans to develop a network of local EV charging stations, starting in key cities like Abuja, Enugu, and Lagos.

The Nigerian government remains committed to electrification, and local companies like Innoson are proving that homegrown innovation can drive real progress. As investments grow and infrastructure improves, Nigeria may well become a leader in EV manufacturing and adoption on the African continent.

Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing is more than just a participant in Nigeria’s EV story, it’s a central character. Alongside supportive government policy and emerging startups, it represents a uniquely Nigerian answer to the global call for cleaner, smarter transportation. With close to 20,000 electric vehicles now navigating Nigerian roads, and momentum building across public and private sectors, the country is charging forward!
