The Dodge RAM RHO or The Ford-F150 Raptor?

The high-performance truck market is evolving, and if you’re deciding between the new Dodge RAM 1500 RHO and the Ford F-150 Raptor, you’re not alone. Dodge discontinued the TRX after the 2024 model year because it could not be modified to meet stricter automotive emissions standards. The company announced the end of production for the legendary RAM TRX—the loud, wild truck powered by a supercharged V8 engine producing over 700 horsepower.

In its place comes the RAM 1500 RHO, which remains powerful but takes a different approach. Instead of the large V8, the RHO is equipped with a new twin-turbo 3.0L inline-six engine called the ‘Hurricane.’ This engine is lighter, more fuel-efficient, and still expected to generate around 540 horsepower. The RHO will maintain impressive speed, but it won’t deliver the same aggressive roar or raw driving experience of the TRX. It’s more modern, smoother, and better suited for the future—but not as untamed.

Meanwhile, the Ford F-150 Raptor has already established itself as a top performer. It features a 3.5L twin-turbo V6 engine producing 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque. Though not as loud as the TRX, the Raptor is fast, rugged, and built for off-road excitement. It has earned a reputation for reliability, balance, and capability on rough terrain. Ford also offers a more extreme version called the Raptor R, which is equipped with a supercharged V8 generating over 700 horsepower. However, the Raptor R comes at a significantly higher price and is primarily targeted at buyers who prioritize maximum performance regardless of cost.

In terms of pricing, the RAM 1500 RHO starts at approximately $71,000, slightly lower than the outgoing TRX. The standard Ford F-150 Raptor begins at around $78,000, depending on optional features. Meanwhile, the Raptor R, with its V8 engine, exceeds $110,000, positioning it as a luxury performance truck.

When it comes to sales, the Ford F-150 Raptor has consistently outperformed the RAM TRX, and it is unlikely that the RHO will match its numbers. The Raptor has been on the market longer, has a more loyal following, and benefits from Ford’s extensive F-150 lineup, making it more accessible and popular—especially in the U.S.

Ultimately, the decision between the RAM 1500 RHO and the F-150 Raptor depends on your preferences. The RHO offers a new engine, increased horsepower, and improved fuel economy. The Raptor provides proven reliability, strong performance, and a well-established reputation. For those who prioritize raw power and don’t mind spending more, the Raptor R or a used TRX will deliver the coveted V8 experience
