China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) made headlines this week by unveiling its innovative EV battery with a significant range of up to 932 miles on a single charge. Dubbed the “Freevoy Dual-Power Battery,” this innovative system features two distinct energy zones, one designed to suit daily driving and the other designed for extended long-distance travel is a bold step forward in addressing the limitations of EV range and could lead to major advancements in electric vehicle technology.

At a press conference ahead of the Shanghai Auto Show, CATL explained that the “Freevoy Dual-Power Battery” is not your typical battery pack. Instead, it combines two packs in one, creating “two powerful, independent energy zones.” The system utilizes both Nickel Cobalt Manganese (NCM) and Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) chemistries, alongside CATL’s “self-forming anode” technology, which enhances energy density by an impressive 60%. The dual-power design ensures a steady and reliable energy supply, making it especially beneficial for autonomous vehicles with advanced systems, according to pcmag.com.

The first energy zone is optimized for everyday driving, while the second zone, focused on extended range, activates during long trips. According to CATL, this represents a transformative approach to tackling EV range challenges and marks the beginning of what the company calls the “multi-power era.”

CATL also showcased a fast-charging battery that can add 323 miles of range in just five minutes—a groundbreaking feature aimed at reducing charging times. This new version offers a 497-mile range (800km) and is a significant improvement over its predecessor, which added 250 miles in 10 minutes. Furthermore, the fast-charging battery is designed to operate efficiently across varying temperatures, including extreme conditions as low as -10°C.

Another innovation unveiled by CATL is the Naxtra battery, which they claim will be the world’s first mass-produced sodium-ion battery. This advanced battery promises greater energy density and a longer lifespan than today’s batteries, all while being more affordable due to its lack of reliance on lithium. CATL highlighted sodium’s inherent safety and abundant reserves, emphasizing how this breakthrough could reduce dependency on lithium resources and strengthen the foundation of new energy technologies. According to Car News China, mass production of the Naxtra battery is expected to begin in December.

While CATL remains the largest EV battery producer globally, competition in China is intensifying. Reuters reported that the company saw a 15% growth in net profit for 2024, the slowest pace in six years.

Although details regarding pricing and availability of these innovations remain unclear, CATL’s groundbreaking developments showcase their continued efforts to push the boundaries of EV technology, pcmag.com reports.

What This Means for the EV Sector

The introduction of CATL’s 932-mile battery marks a major turning point for the electric vehicle industry. With a range that far surpasses current standards, this innovation eliminates range anxiety, making EVs a more practical choice for long-distance travel. It paves the way for electric cars to rival gasoline-powered vehicles in convenience and efficiency, helping EVs appeal to a wider audience.

The dual-power system, combined with advanced technologies like fast charging and the sodium-ion battery, could inspire automakers and battery developers to push EV manufacturing further. These advancements also address safety, affordability, and environmental concerns, bringing us closer to making EVs accessible to more people.

CATL’s breakthroughs highlight their leadership in shaping the future of electric mobility, with potential benefits for sustainability and global carbon reduction efforts.
